Cabo San Lucas is one of the richest Sportfishing areas in the world. Over 850 different species of fish swim in the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. The area has amazing deapth thus fishermen catch many deep-sea species even from the beach area. Fish caught here include species such as: dorado, the black, blue, and striped marlin, rays, roosterfish, sailfish, shark, swordfish, tuna and wahoo. Several major tournaments are held each year including the Bisbee Black and Blue Marlin and For Pete's Sake in the fall. For marlin fishing you can't beat September, October and November. In the summer, you will likely catch dorado, sailfish, tuna and wahoo. In the winter and early spring you will often catch striped marlin and yellowtail.

A fishing license is required to fish in Los Cabos and you can obtain a Mexican sportfishing license from the Mexican Fisheries Department. The cost is $8 for a day or $25 for a month. To purchase a license before your trip, you can contact the Mexico Department of Fisheries at (619) 233-6956, or by mail at: 2550 5th Avenue, Suite 101, San Diego, CA 92103. There are many companies that offer fishing excursions (most offer lunch) and last anywhere from 3 to 6 hours.

River Rafting/ Kayaking

For peaceful kayaking, the most suitable place is Chileno Bay (Cabo San Lucas Tourist Corridor).  There are also guided excursions like the Cabo Pulmo day trip (about one-hour drive from San Jose Del Cabo Airport), which offers you not only kayaking, but also snorkeling, diving nd lunch on the beach.

Scuba Diving/ Snorkelling

Two of the most popular dives include Cabo Pulmo (http://www.cabopulmo.com/home.html) and Sand Falls.  The National Marine Reserve of Cabo Pulmo in the East Cape offers shallow water dives with colorful fish on a live coral reef - the only one found on North America's west coast.  Just off the tip of Land's End in Cabo San Lucas, you'll find the undersea Sand Falls, discovered by Jacques Costeau.  A cascading fall of sand forms a unique spectacle on this wall dropping 1,200 feet.  This 90 foot deep water dive offers a glimpse of some of the tropical sand larger fish.

Dive shops are located near the Plaza Las Glorias docks and on Playa El Médano.  Beginners can test the waters at Roca Pelícano (Pelican Rock), and Land's End.  More advanced divers jump in the deep end at Sands Falls or at Neptune's Finger, known for its amazing canyon-wall dive.  Another area for your Cabo scuba diving is Gordo Banks (situated at the Sea of Cortez.) This is for experienced divers only.  The diving expedition is 28 miles off shore, and the dive is 110 feet down.

There are quite a few small coves and beaches for snorkeling in Cabo.  The very best is Cabo Pulmo (http://www.cabopulmo.com/home.html), also beautiful Santa Maria Bay, Playa Palmilla, Chileno Bay, and famous Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach) at Land's end.

Whale Watching

In Cabo San Lucas whale-watching is common from December/January to about April.  The annual visits of grays, orcas, humpbacks, blues and other whales can be seen in Baja waters.  Also found in these waters is the world's largest fish, the whale shark.  An estimated 11,000 gray whales make this journey of over 10,000 miles to bear their calves and frolic in Pacific Coast lagoons to the north of Los Cabos.  Some continue south, veering around Land's End and into the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.  Tour companies offer day air tours and multi-day land tours.

Whale petting is a very popular tourist attraction.  North of Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific side, there are several protected lagoons which are winter breeding and calving waters for gray whales and other species. Tourists hire boats to pet the whales, or to watch them crash out of the water up close.  In some places the whales allow visitors to pet them from fishing docks.

There are three main lagoons throughout the Baha where whales come every year.  They are:

Windsurfing

The most ideal place for windsurfing is about 50 miles north of Los Cabos airport, at Vela Baja, located in the small town of Los Barriles.  The wind conditions are ideal, especially from November through March.
In the winter months 15-30 knot northerly winds are quite common along the Sea of Cortez coast, perfect for windsurfing.
